What's in a Blind Box? Our Monthly Dog Collar Subscription

Large Blind Box monthly dog collar subscription from Hippie Hound Hut, showing a handmade collar and matching leash

A blind box is a monthly subscription that sends your dog a handmade collar in a fabric we pick for you. You choose the box size and tell us your dog's collar size; we choose the pattern, make it to order, and send it out with the next round.

That's the whole idea. The surprise is the fabric, never the fit — every box is sized to your dog before it's made.

What is a dog blind box?

It's the opposite of browsing. Instead of scrolling a collection and deciding between prints, you hand the choice over and get something you probably wouldn't have picked yourself.

That sounds like a small thing until you've bought four collars in a row in the same colour family. Most of us have a default — the blue, the black, the safe one — and a blind box is how you end up with a pattern you'd have scrolled straight past and then wear for a year.

What isn't a surprise:

  • The size. You tell us your dog's collar size when you subscribe, and every box is made to it.
  • The hardware. Solid cast, weld-free metal on every collar, same as anything else we make.
  • The build. Each box is made to order, not pulled from a shelf of leftovers.

What's actually in each box?

Three boxes, and the difference is how much comes in them.

  • Small Blind Box ($25/month). One handmade collar in a surprise fabric, sized to your dog.
  • Medium Blind Box ($45/month). One handmade collar plus a matching leash in the same surprise fabric.
  • Large Blind Box ($65/month). Collar, matching leash, and a bonus accessory — an engraved tag, a bandana, or another handmade extra.

If you're only going to subscribe to one, the Medium is the one that makes the most sense. Collar and leash come from the same fabric run, which is the pairing that's hardest to get right later — fabric runs out, and a collar bought in March can be impossible to match in September.

The Small is the low-commitment way in, and the Large is the one people pick when they're buying it as a gift and want the box to feel like a box.

How does the monthly subscription work?

Four steps, and the last one is the only one that trips people up.

  1. Pick your box — Small, Medium or Large.
  2. Tell us boy or girl. This is how we steer the fabric choice, so the prints land somewhere near your taste.
  3. Give us your dog's collar size, Small through XXL.
  4. Wait for the next round. Boxes are made to order and ship in rounds, so your first one goes out with the next batch rather than the next morning.

Billing is monthly. You can skip a month, pause, or cancel from your account — you don't need to email anyone or catch us between markets to do it.

Skipping is worth knowing about for a practical reason: a collar lasts a lot longer than a month. Plenty of subscribers run the box every other month by skipping, which keeps the rotation fresh without building a drawer full of collars nobody's wearing.

How do you pick the right size?

Same way you'd size any collar, and it's worth doing properly once because every box after that inherits it.

Measure your dog's neck where the collar actually sits — high on the neck, behind the ears, not down at the shoulders — and add two fingers' worth of slack. Then match that measurement to a size rather than guessing from your dog's breed or weight. Two labs the same weight can be two sizes apart.

Our size guide walks through the measuring properly, including what to do if your dog lands between sizes.

Two things specific to a subscription:

  • Puppies. If your dog is still growing, a blind box is a good fit for exactly that reason — the collar arriving in three months can be a size up. Just update your size in your account before the next round, and don't set it and forget it.
  • Double coats. A winter coat on a collie or a husky changes the measurement enough to matter. Measure on a coat you'll have most of the year, and size for the thicker one if you're between.

Who is a blind box actually for?

Honestly, not everyone. It's a good fit if you:

  • Like your dog in a different collar every so often and don't want to shop for it.
  • Are buying for someone else's dog and know the size but not their taste.
  • Want a matching collar and leash pairing that's guaranteed to come from the same fabric.
  • Have a dog whose collar takes a beating and gets replaced regularly anyway.

It's a bad fit if you have a specific print in mind, or if your dog only suits certain colours and you'd rather choose. In that case, buy exactly what you want from matching sets and skip the surprise — nobody wins if the box arrives and the pattern isn't you.

FAQ

Can I tell you what patterns I do and don't like?

Boy or girl is the steer we take at checkout, and that covers most of it. If there's something you'd genuinely never put on your dog, say so when you order and we'll work around it — but the more you narrow it, the less it's a blind box, and at some point you're better off just buying the collar you want.

What happens if the collar doesn't fit?

Get in touch. Sizing is the one part of a blind box that shouldn't be a gamble, so if the measurement was right and the fit is wrong, that's ours to sort out. Measure before your first box rather than after, and this almost never comes up.

Can I give a blind box as a gift?

Yes, and it's one of the better dog gifts going, because the recipient gets something new every month rather than one thing in December. You'll need their dog's collar size to set it up — if you can't ask without spoiling it, the Large Blind Box as a one-off is the safer play.

Not sure a surprise is your thing? Browse the collars and pick the print yourself.
