Matching Dog and Owner Outfits: How to Coordinate With Your Dog

The easiest way to match your dog is to share one colour, not a whole outfit. Pick a shirt for you, then pick a bandana, collar or dress for your dog that picks up the same colour or print.

That's it. Below is how to build a pairing, how to get the sizes right for both of you, and how to make the look work on the day.

How do you match an outfit with your dog?

Start with one piece and build around it. You can lead with your shirt or with your dog's gear, but don't try to match everything at once.

  • Share one colour. Hot pink lettering on your tee and a pink collar on your dog reads as a matched pair from across a parking lot.
  • Or share one print. If your dog wears a bandanna print collar, a bandanna print bandana or sling in the same family ties it together.
  • Keep the rest plain. Jeans, a plain jacket, a dog with a simple collar. One shared colour stands out more when nothing else competes with it.
  • Match the mood, not just the colour. A playful slogan tee goes with a bright print. A flag bandana suits a Fourth of July barbecue.

If you and your dog both wear busy prints that clash, it stops looking matched and starts looking like laundry day. One loud piece each, at most.

What can your dog wear to match you?

There are four easy places to put the matching colour on your dog:

  • A bandana. The quickest win. Our bandanas are $15 in Small, Medium and Large, and come in Pink Tree Camo, Blue Bandanna Print, American Flag and Comic Pow. They sit over the collar, so your dog's everyday collar stays on.
  • A collar, or a collar and leash set. The match you see on every walk, not just photo day. Collars and leashes come in prints including bandanna, camo, bone camo, aztec and American Flag.
  • A dress. Our Purple Floral and Turquoise Aztec dresses run XS to XL, from $28. They make the biggest statement of the four.
  • A sling carrier. If you carry a small dog, the sling is part of your outfit as much as theirs. They're $35, in six prints.

The tightest match is the same print twice. American Flag comes as a bandana and as a collar and leash. Blue Bandanna comes as a bandana, a collar, a leash and a sling. Stack two of those and the look is done.

Which shirt goes with which print?

Our human tees are $25 and carry the message for you: In My Dog Mom Era, My Dogs Are Not Spoiled, Frenchie Mom and I Love My Frenchie. Let the lettering colour choose your dog's piece.

  • In My Dog Mom Era is a white tie-dye tee with hot pink lettering. Pair it with a Pink Bandanna or Pink Bone Camo collar, or the Pink Tree Camo bandana.
  • Frenchie Mom is a white tee with red lettering. A Red Bandanna collar and leash picks that red straight up.
  • The other two tees work the same way. Look at the lettering colour in the photo and find that colour in your dog's gear.

Frenchie owners get the full set here: a Frenchie tee for you and a print your Frenchie can wear.

How do you get the sizes right for both of you?

Size each piece for the body wearing it. A matching outfit only looks good if both halves fit.

For you. The tees come in adult Small to 3XL. 2XL adds $2 and 3XL adds $4. We don't publish a shirt measurement chart, so the simplest check is a tee you already own that fits the way you like. If you're unsure between two sizes, send us a message and we'll help.

For your dog:

  • Collars and harnesses go by neck and chest measurements. Use our size guide and measure your dog, not the breed.
  • Bandanas go by the neck. If you're between Small, Medium and Large, send us your dog's neck measurement.
  • Dresses go by chest, neck and length. Measure all three before you pick.

If you're ordering a gift set for someone else, get their size and their dog's measurements before you order. Guessing on one half spoils the match.

How do you make the matching look work on the day?

A few small habits make the difference between a cute moment and a dog who wants it all off.

  • Try your dog's piece on at home first. A few minutes with treats before the big day. A dress or bandana on a dog who has never worn one can turn into a wriggle-fest.
  • Fit the bandana right. It should sit flat over the collar with the point at the chest. Our guide to putting a bandana on a dog shows how to keep it from turning.
  • Keep ID on. Dress-up day is still a walk-out-the-door day. The collar with your dog's name and your number stays on underneath.
  • Get down to their level for photos. Crouch so you and your dog are both in frame at the same height. That's where the match shows best.
  • Watch the heat. A dress or a sling adds warmth. On a hot day, keep the outfit time short and offer water often.

FAQ

Do matching outfits have to be the same print?

No. Sharing one colour is enough, and it's often easier on the eye. Same-print pairs like American Flag or Blue Bandanna are there if you want the full match.

What's the easiest matching piece to start with?

A bandana. It's $15, it slips over your dog's existing collar, and most dogs forget they're wearing one within a few minutes.

Can I get a matching set for two dogs and one owner?

Yes. Pick one shirt for you and the same print in a collar, leash or bandana for each dog. Sizing goes dog by dog, so measure each one.
